How long does it take to exercise if you have a good broker? Could you buy the stock immediately and then exercise the option later to get around this -- of course, this assumes that your broker can get the buy order through.

What risk would you face doing the opposite on a call -- selling the stock short at a high and then exercising the option later?

Tom:
Good comments. I'm opposed to becoming cannon fodder. Many of today's investors did not experience the delights of October, 1987, hence they have no idea of the variety of tricks and dodges market pros have at their disposal when markets become sufficiently ugly to threaten their existence.

I'm also amazed at the complacency displayed by "investors" with respect to Asian problems. They are huge, growing, and not yet fully defined. Rarely do markets provide such vivid warnings, as well as an opportunity to slip out the back door before the blood-letting begins. This weak Christmas rally is a blessing for the more observant.
Best, Earlie
