Lost among the explosive reports about Hillary Clinton and her family’s foundation on Thursday is a claim made by a Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times journalist that suggests she caught the Clinton Foundation red-handed in a lie about a meeting between former President Bill Clinton and Kazatomprom, a state-owned nuclear holding company in Kazakhstan.

But first, some context is required.

Years ago, officials with Kazatomprom were reportedly interested in taking an “ equity stake” in Westinghouse, a U.S.-based corporation that works in the “civilian nuclear field.”

But, as New York Times reporter Jo Becker reported, such a deal would require review by the U.S. government. That’s where Frank Giustra, a Canadian business executive and founder of the company that would become Uranium One, entered the picture.

Giustra reportedly set up a meeting between Kazatomprom officials and Bill Clinton himself — at the former president’s home in Chappaqua, New York. Clinton and is a major donor to the Clinton Foundation. The two even flew to Kazakhstan together when Giustra’s company landed a lucrative deal to secure uranium mines there.

Here’s where the lie comes in.

Becker told Fox News’ Bret Baier that when she first asked a Clinton Foundation spokesman and Giustra about the meeting, they both said no such meeting ever took place. However, when she informed them that the then-head of Kazatomprom not only told her that the meeting had taken place, but also showed her a picture of himself with Clinton at the Chappaqua home proudly displayed in his office, they were forced to admit the meeting occurred.

Though much of the details will be used by Clinton’s political opponents during the 2016 presidential race, the developments outlined in Schweizer’s “Clinton Cash” have some relevance today — and it involves Russia.

Following a future merger, Giustra’s company became a “uranium giant” called Uranium One.

“And then,” Baier reported, “the Russians bought it.”

The Russian-owned company became “very active in acquiring uranium assets actually in the United States itself” and now controls what was projected to be roughly half of the United States’ uranium, according to Schweizer.

The author also said the federal government’s approval would have been needed for the Uranium One deal to go through — “and one of those people that has to approve that deal is Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.”

“The problem is that Hillary Clinton’s family foundation, the Clinton Foundation, was receiving tens of millions of dollars from shareholders in Uranium One, who wanted the Russian government to acquire them because it would be a financial landfall,” Schweizer told Fox News.

What does it mean for the U.S. today?

A Russian company that is essentially controlled by Vladimir Putin’s government is now in charge of a substantial portion of America’s uranium. Because Russia already sends uranium to Iran, American uranium could certainly end up in the radical regime’s hands at the same time President Barack Obama is attempting to negotiate with the nation to slow its nuclear program.
