Wo is the broker? an alternative would be buying puts since options are traded on the stock.
The Jan OOM options are pricey but you could try ITM puts 25 for Jan or later based on when you expect this sucker to drop.
Puts will be immune to being called if everyone rushed to the exit.
I think a short is preferable on this stock as compared to options though.

Mark,
I have heard others say the same thing who trade at e-trade. I haven't had any problem.
The spike we are seeing is probably year end portfolio adjustment by managers looking for profits to bolster their balance sheets. The ending percent will be used for the following year in PR to get customers. Short gains in AVNT can balance marginal performance in another area of the portfolio. As long as performance is rated year to year and you need to beat the DOW this type of activity will take place. Next year is only 5 days away and then is bombs away.
