Oil still gets subsidies. No. Oil gets a massive negative subsidy. The taxes targeted at the oil industry and its products exceed the sum total of actual subsidies (which are not significant) and targeted tax breaks the oil industry gets. Good ideas should get subsidies Good ideas should be able to win out because they are good ideas. The subsidies hinder the process of determining what is actually a good idea, by making the subsidized more successful whether or not they are actually good overall. Even for ideas that are good overall subsidies cause distortions, they get them to be applied in place of even better ideas, and in places or ways where they aren't good ideas.
