Actually Suncor took advantage of the legendary fact that the French don't have the balls to stick it out till completion. Just like in the previous world wars. Hitler invaded France and they crumbled. Never put up a fight. The rest of the world had to rescue them. In Canada Quebec was the only province which did not have conscription.
In the 1914/19 war, French Canada supplied approximately 15,000 volunteers during the war. Most came from the Montreal area, though Québec City, Western Québec and Eastern Ontario provided significant numbers. A precise total is difficult to establish since attestation papers did not require enlistees to indicate their mother tongue. Though French Canadians comprised nearly 30 percent of the Canadian population, they made up only about 4 percent of Canadian volunteers. Less than 5 percent of Quebec’s males of military age were enrolled in infantry battalions, compared to 14-15 percent in Western Canada and Ontario. Moreover, half of Quebec’s recruits were English. The war of 39/45 was as bad. Never even had the fortitude to stand in the face of adversity with France their mother country. But rather left it to the English, the USA and others. .

So like always the that French partner bailed when the going got rough and Suncor picked up their portion on the cheap in a depressed market. No different than you or I buying stocks when they are low rather than at the top. I believe in Teck's current financial position with copper, coal and the other minerals they mine being in the dumps. It would not have been prudent for them to participate. Oil will be back in the 65 to $80 range again and Ft Hills will be a great asset.

Investors should concentrate more on making money and less on environmental issues. They are on the opposite ends of the spectrum.
