To Allen, DRIOMEGA, Ken or any other technically savvy poster: Now that the thread has quieted down a bit, I'd like to ask a couple questions that've been bothering me for a while:
How has SyQuest been able to market a high capacity removable storage drive at such a low cost- especially for the disks- compared to the Jaz drive? I don't need Iomega's products for any commercial reason, but I do see a tremendous value to being able to archive and edit my extensive library of mostly boring camcorder tapes, and see either the Jaz or SparQ as the ideal solution. When I look at the price of the media, the SparQ leaps out as the obvious choice. If Iomega maintains their premium pricing, do they run the risk of losing out on a potentially lucrative product niche?
Is SyQuest ultimately going to go out of business by selling their disks at a loss, or do they actually have the ability to produce their disks at a much lower cost?
For my purposes - video and audio recording - the Zip just doesn't seem to have the capacity (I know you can't understand us great unwashed, Rocky, but the audio quality is not that big of a deal for me - I think CD's are fine, vinyl is just as good, and I can comfortably tolerate listening to tapes on a boom box.) Thanks for any input anyone can provide.
