I speculate that the Cambrian period marked the emergence of sex as a vehicle for novel gene combinations produced from proven and stable genes. Single celled organisms had long exchanged genes in a inefficient exchange during conjugation. I further speculate that the conjugation became more efficient at about the same time that the new plate tectonics led to different habitats which promoted differential survival of the combinations of genes leading to the great increase in diversity.
