That is one of her embellishments. Yes, she worked as a secretary. When she was in law school. When she graduated from business school, she went to work at AT&T as a management trainee. Where, by all accounts did well. But when she no longer had someone above her, she made bad decisions. Her focus was driving sales. Even if, like a Lucent, the company loaned their customers the money to buy their stuff. So Lucent's sales soared under Carly, and was in the process of crashing and burning when HP picked her up. At HP she bought Compaq, which helped double sales. Profits, however, were unchanged. And that was after firing 30,000 people.
