More The Big Short, here's the trailer.

youtube.com

I never met Mike, but I did talk to him several times, back when he was starting up his hedge fund, and was looking for, essentially, seed money. He had assets under management of just a few million.
I was board treasurer of a small NFP, we were looking for alternative asset classes. i pitched Scion Capital hard for a small percentage of our assets, I was so very impressed with Mike's acumen. He was scheduled to fly in to pitch the board. He had to cancel - in retrospect, I think he may have not been too keen with the "dog and pony" process.
My pitch (back then he had I think a 250K minimum) failed by one vote. In retrospect, even if we had bought in, I think the lack of transparency, and the nature of his investments (i.e. the sub prime/housing derivatives) probably would have made it difficult to hold on to the investment, given the group's conservative nature. As I understand it, he was deluged by calls from investors about the derivatives in the portfolio. I think that will probably come out in the movie.
Never did I think this Vanderbilt Doctor would become the subject of a movie.
Do we know what Mike is up to now?

Lol. Yes, I got it. You guys do have a sense of humor. Which is not much exibited here on this, a usually serious thread.

Of those past days, impressions still remain. I've always felt that back then I knew much more about value investing than The Man, who I saw as somebody reaching for a methodology and an entree into the professional investing business. A dynamic guy, innovative and aggressive and obviously smart - some traits I would've liked to have had, but never did.

I remember having many discussions with him about stocks and some heated arguments about methodology. If SiliconInvestor is mentioned in the movie, we'll get more inquiries about him. Well, he has the rep and the money from his big contrary bet. Although he was the leader/facilitator and maybe most popular and articulate person on the thread, he was not the best investor here. In my opinion at least a couple of others (not me) had picks which repeatedly proved worthwhile.
