I wonder if there is a bias in the auto mileage readout on our cars. When we take a trip I like to see what the mileage for the trip is. The few times I have checked the indicated mileage vs the hand calculation following a fillup - the hand calculation seems to be always less to me. Perhaps the fill level is inconsistent.

Me thinks the onboard calculation has a bias to the upside. I suspect any such bias is simply to make one feel good about their car.
