Depending on his hardware, he might be able to juggle things around.

Using Windows disk cleanup is a possible option.

If his C: and D: are equal size, he could use disk cleanup and to make room for his D: files in a folder on C:.

Then he could clone C: to D:. After that he could delete the D: folder on C: to make room for the Win10 installation.

He would then be able to boot Win10 or Win8.1.
