I am in Northern LA County and currenly use LA Cellular. I have been waiting for Sprint. Last week we received a flier in the mail advertising the new Sprint service in LA county. They are pushing the Samsung phone ($149.95 plus $50 rebate). The Q-Phone ($499) and Sony's (can't remember the price, $399??) are also advertised.

A couple of points:

1). They are advertising no contract $75/750 minutes and $50/375 minutes. These rates are substantially lower than the prevailing market which is coming down. LA Cellular $249 (I think its lower now) for 600 Minutes and $149/300 minutes. As you can see this will get a few subscibers.

2). The bad news....spotty service. I do not have service in my area and the enitie Southern California area is not covered. Although this is temporary, it still may prevent a massive move to Sprint until their service area is solid. I found this out by first calling Sprint (sales rep could not tell me exactly where service was provided) and then called local Radio Shack store and they were able to confirm no service yet in my area but expect in early to mid 1998.

However, this major reduction in cost will certainly attract cutomers in Orange County and the main parts of LA county and this is the major population area. Remember, metropolitan LA is only 10MM strong.

The 1/12/98 edition of Fortune features some new gadgets, including the Nokia 9000i PCS phone - $1000. This phone has a full keyboard like an electronic organizer. Does anyone know whether this is CDMA ?
