There was a recent BBC World Service documentary re the Tea Plantations in India and the immense poverty and terrible living conditions of the tea leaf pickers (my idea of a hell on earth) and their families...it was really tough to watch and.hard to imagine how it could get any better for the trapped future generations.

There was a statistic shown at the end of the show that said (from memory) rural India has 800 million plus people with over 1/3rd still illiterate, 300 million plus.

The Sub Continent, a most interesting and fascinating place whose people I have met and had contact with in this country are similarly interesting and fascinating (I also love the food, enjoy reading about its history...) but it is one part of the world I do not have any desire to personally visit.
