Firefox: Troubleshooting and Uninstalling ...

Josh,

<< An uninstall would also remove addons >>

A Firefox Uninstall does not remove addons. Addons are just one set of several score of folders and items in the Firefox profile(s) folder which is stored in a separate location from the Firefox program files. Addons, extensions, bookmarks, passwords, toolbars and other user data in that profile folder is undisturbed by an uninstall of Firefox. My FF profile (e.g.)is here at this location:

I backup that complete profile (and those for T-Bird and SeaMonkey) once per week. Users of any or all of the Mozilla applications (Firefox, SeaMonkey, Thunderbird, etc.) are well advised to keep them backed up frequently when they are running well using the easy to use MozBackup and Restore program that I use and have recommended here before in case user data becomes corrupted, a hijack occurs, mail is lost, etc.

These backups are in addition to an image stored on an external drive. I store them in a folder in my B:/Backup partition. About 1/3rd of what is stored in the profile folder before scrolling 'unknown files' down is shown in the screenshot below:

Restoring an older MozBackup backup from when Firefox was running well will clear up any corruption in the user profile.

After a Firefox uninstall and reinstall, just restore the known good backup if any item in the user profile might possibly have been suspected to have caused the crash.

There is no current conflict between Firefox 40.x or 41.0 and a clean and up to date Windows 7/8.0/8.1 install, or a conflict with an up-todate Internet Explorer so far as I know. Firefox should run with 1 or more other popular brosers (Chrome/Safari/SeaMonkey, etc.) without issue. If a users current Firefox installation crashes there is a issue on the users system and the issue could manifest in one of the other installed browsers as well.

Troubleshooting Firefox guide (for crashes) begins here: support.mozilla.org

Note: An uninstall using CP Add/Remove will not remove all debris from the Firefox program folder. Revo Uninstaller (free or Pro which I use, with an advanced scan) will remove most of that debris that the packaged uninstaller won't but its wise to remove the program folder itself after its contents are uninstalled to have a toyally clean uninstall before reinstall. Firefox provides a 'refresh' function to restore addons to their original default but the addons (and the complete profile should be backed up first.

I could go on, but thats more than a Byte so enough of a long-winded Bite for now.

Cheers, - Eric L. -
