My point was that Christianity expanded because the emperor insisted upon it, and not because of evangelical conversions. Prior to 300 AD Christianity was yet another minor religion that was growing. I remember when Harri-Krishna was a growing religion. A lot of different religions were growing and Christianity had a particular boost from the Roman destruction of Jerusalem. The real reason Christianity was chosen to represent the empire is that it's growth was primarily in Anatolia (modern Turkey). Constantine was in upbringing more Greek than Roman and when he planned to move the empire to Greece he also wanted to eliminate the power of the Zeus led God system of the east which was tied closely to the Jupiter led God system of the west. Whatever the early Christian belief system was, Constantine had it rewritten at the council of Nicaea.
