You can drive it on private property even without a license, or you can own it at let someone else drive it (drive you around or just use it themselves). With a gun that might get you in trouble for making a "straw purchase" Also a driver's license is pretty easy and cheap to get if you know how to drive. Gun permits and CCPs can be far more restrictive. Do people have to wait months in Chicago to get a driver's licence or legally buy a car? No. We give drivers licenses out to 16 year olds in a number of states. Any American (and in an number of places illegal immigrants) who has a modest amount of driving knowledge/ability or better can quickly and cheaply get a license in any state they recide in. There is no background check, a felony record or a history of severe psychosis doesn't matter. Only a suspension of or revocation of your license matters, nothing else is even checked. If you don't live in Illinois now, try moving to Chicago. See how long it takes you to legally buy a car, and to get a liscene. Compare how long it takes you to get a legal gun that you can carry around with you in a useable state (not dismanted and locked up, meaning you need a CCP, in addition to an FOID card). If you have a 16 or 17 year old kid, they can get a license (with your permission until they turn 18, no need after that) but they can't get a CCP or an FOID Even when they turn 18 they will have additional difficulty getting an FOID beyond but they can go right in and get their drivers license. If you want guns to be more restricted, believe me you don't want them to be treated like cars.
