Yep, intelligent about their realm... more and more data rolling in. Where intelligence, resides how they do it all, etc. are good questions :-) I will add that "we" are doing what they are doing all the time in our bodies, the "big we"- sense of self- just isn't aware of it and therefore how to do it... the little guys take care of it for us it turns out. Something must be front loaded to distinguish life from non-life... but there is no doubt that all living things are also intelligent all by themselves, unless one wants to change the definition of "intelligent" or "thing". That book addresses your concerns.
