Sure. In fact, I think gold metallization is (or was) used for gallium arsenide circuits.

Bear in mind Gold is very costly - and kills minority carrier lifetimes if it ever gets into the bulk silicon.

Further, gold doesn't adhere well to silicon dioxide and I don't know if it can be readily etched by plasma etching techniques.

Not to mention, gold is till not cheap - not even at $290/oz.
