Yesterday, I was told it is happening this winter.

Too soon. Colder than normal temperatures, sure. But it will take a while for the Gulf Stream to wind down.

There are other implications. Like an up to 3 foot rise in sea level along the US east coast if the Gulf Stream is no longer flowing.
