I think it started with Jeanette (co-founder and current CTO) who got the engineers something nice every year since the company was founded. In the earlier years the gifts were personalized: overnite bag with embroidered name and logo, pocket knife with engraved name and logo, stainless thermos style mug with engraved name and logo. I think '94 was the last year that the gifts were individually personalized. Last year she gave every member of the various engineering departments a Seiko watch. About '94 or '95 other department heads noticed and started doing the same kind of thing. I don't know how it is now, but in the past these gifts were NOT paid for by the company, they were from the individual managers. // marc
