It probably never should have been started in its current form, but tens of millions of people actively depend on it now, and throw in others who have to an extent planned their life around it, and given money that they could have used to save for their own retirement to it and the number climbs in to the hundreds of millions range. Probably best (and certainly the only politically possible way to keep it and other entitlements from blowing up) to reign in (and other entitlements) in, rather then just suddenly canceling it. Purely from my own self interest, even though I've paid in for a long time. I might still do better if it was canceled. Social Security has a lousy rate of return for people not close to or already in retirement, and that's before considering the fact that the program can't fund its current promises so its going to eventually pay out less anyway. Its similar (if perhaps not quite as bad), as a lot of local government pensions that are causing some local jurisdictions in to bankruptcy. Politicians can gain support for promising payouts later, and when it hits the fan their long gone.
