They do apply for stock 5.56 your not going to use that for very long range or big game hunting.

5.56 is the caliber used in competition (has to be a military service rifle caliber to compete at Perry) - hunting is varmints only - although some states allow it for deer - but I don't think that's ethical hunting.

Of course those service rifles are heavily modified internally - but retain external service rifle configuration.
