Bdog, >>>i'm just starting out and trying out ta software<<<
I'm one of the novices following along on this thread trying to learn some of the lingo and insights from TA, but I don't have a lot of time to dedicate to it. So what I've done for the time being is started reading some books and I signed up for IQ Net's IQ Suite. It's ~$19/mo (first 30 days free). The software resides on your PC, but you don't have to download files because they have a dial-in (ISP) interfaces to a central server. It's very fast. They have lots of indicators which you can customize. You can establish templates for scanning/screen for stocks. You might want to check it out.

I thought John Murphy's "The Visual Investor" was a good getting started book. Martin Pring's "Technical Analysis Explained" was recommened by some folks on the thread (I've purchased it, but haven't read it yet).

Andy Gabor has a web page where he's collected and organized a wealth of information from this thread, if you haven't browsed through it already.

I think about getting MetaStock, but the price and the downloading don't appeal to me right now.

Good luck with your selection and trading.

Bdog or anyone: here's a pretty good write-up from Bloomberg on three charting packages: MetaStock, SuperCharts, and Windows on Wallstreet.
