g.w.: >> "This blows away ADSL [Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line]," said Megsinet Chief Executive Officer Mike Henry. "A customer can be on the Net and talking on the phone at the same time on one line." <<

I'm not sure why this would blow away ADSL. ADSL allows one to talk on the phone and surf the net at the same time using 1 line.

>> He predicted the service will cost about $60 per month (including a phone line) and that the modems will retail for about $199. <<

ADSL will cost ~$60/month, and run ~$500-$600/line. What is the cost of the Central Office modem for this Nortel solution? Does the ISP have to purchase a Nortel switch?

>> The system uses a variant of Digital Subscriber Line technology to offer high-speed access along with advanced call-routing capabilities over standard copper telephone wires. <<

This looks like a technology which places the 1-Meg of Data onto the public switched VOICE network. I'm under the impression the RBOC's want to get long duration calls off the voice network. ADSL is filtered out and placed onto a Data network... until later.

gw--

the guy from mesignet (sp?) is wrong. CDSL wont let you talk and send/recieve data on the same line.

this blows ADSL away? i am getting sick and tired of everyone talking about how crappy adsl is. lets make it plain and simple. in two years many of you are going to have adsl service. and most will have wstl equipment. it is that simple.

now, if GTE said that they were going to use CDSL instead of ADSL, i would be worried.

good luckto all,
trey
