Where is OSHA on silica handling for the solar panel industry?
Silica is not used to make solar panels, silicon is, but silica is the primary source of silicon. Silica is merely sand.
To convert it to silicon it must be reacted with Cl2 to convert it to SiCl4 which can then be easily reduced to pure silicon.. Solar cell manufacturers buy silicon either in the polycrystalline form or the single crystal form... So to answer your question, OSHA is not concerned about silica in the solar panel industry although it is very much concerned about silica use in other industries.... Miner's Black Lung disease is called silicosis but has nothing to do with silica....it is caused by coal (carbon) dust.
