China ship 'seriously damaged' Great Barrier Reef
coal carrier kept on grinding against a coral shoal for more than a kilometre during the week it was stranded, turning coral into dust.

The coral can recover from the freighter.
It never will when you make an island out of a reef.

If you lower the level of the oceans the coral will be exposed to sun and air and will die
