He was deployed in Iraq for about a year. His job was to drive an MRAP, not a particularly unsafe place to be except when they happen upon an IED or EFP, which wasn't a daily event for his unit.

That there was confusion is no big deal. Had he been killed I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have gotten into it on SI though... None of the people he worked with was killed during that tour.
