AOL says holiday shopping surges
December 23, 1997, 4:40 a.m. PT

The number of retail transactions recorded by
America Online (AOL) in the two weeks after
Thanksgiving Day doubled compared with the same
two-week period last year, the Internet service
provider said.

In a media statement, AOL said it counted twice as
many online shopping orders as in the year-earlier
period.

AOL attributed the overall increase in holiday sales
to a surge of new online shoppers and to increasingly
sophisticated use of the electronic medium by its
merchant partners to target specific shoppers.

In particular, AOL said consumer demand was
growing for time-saving offerings, such as its
Last-Minute Gift Shop.

"Our members are showing they're ready and willing
to capitalize on the convenience and time savings of
buying anything and everything online, from
postcards under a dollar to $3,500 treadmills," AOL
Networks President Bob Pittman said.

AOL has 114 merchant partners that offer their
wares from "storefronts" set up on its online
shopping channel.

AOL stock climbed 5-1/8 points on Monday, ending
the day at 89-7/8.
