I have had a few malware JavaScript invasions that produce a ransomware message on the Safari browser, but these are quite easy to fix.
There's an extension I use in Safari on a Mac designed to catch those ransomware and fake troubleshooting notices, it's called ScamZapper. You can find it here:

It also includes a companion app to help you if you run into a scam popup that ScamZapper doesn't catch.

Frank, looking at recommended settings in malwarebytes I find that root kit detection is unchecked.
Don't know why. I checkmarked it and ran a scan with zero threats found.
