Larry: I haven't investigated this further, but some mutual funds can be shorted. I'm sure you can find one that will give something close to a DOW short with better downside. You might ask your broker.
Also look at Rydex Ursa if you want a S&P short for more than a month, its long-term holding costs are lower and gives better downside profit.

There was some stuff in this week's Barron's about something
called "Diamonds" that sounded like they might have been
supposed to track the Dow... did anyone get what that was all
about? Also I guess you could use Dow options to make synthetic
short, but commissions and spreads may suck (this is beyond my
ken anyway).
