Lots of people in China, including in big cities, heat and cook with small coal burning stoves in their homes, apartments


Same thing in Korea - my house used kerosene - but a lot of people still use coal. Nearly every BBQ restaurant I went to in Korea used coal for cooking meats at your table. Absolutely the best meals ever - not to mention the heat during the bitterly cold winters - it was always a treat. They used heavy duty tongs and carry a red hot brick to your table - was always a bit exciting as they dropped in into the BBQ in the middle.
