Just a general note to all relating to the tire business: A few years ago, an acquaintance of mine with an independent tire business (selling big-name brand tires) elected to retire and sell the business. His ability to do business as an independent had been severely eroded by the presence in the community of warehouse operations like Price Club/Costco and Sam's Club. These warehouser's could avail themselves of large pricing discounts, and the tire distributors were unresponsive to the independents' need for some price adjustment to allow them to maintain a competitive position. Caught in what he felt was an untenable position, he sold out.

Given his experience, it wouldn't be at all hard to believe that there are other dealers (not in a retirement position or mood) who are looking for some means to achieve the benefits of higher purchasing volumes. In that light, the CVIA/WOTD story is plausible. JimA
