I agree with you. I think that there is a lot of year end short covering for tax purposes (to apply the losses against gains in other areas), to clean out portfolios, etc.

Also, there is probably some long buying (not that much though--I think the run is getting a little extended) to nudge the shorts into covering.

Interestingly, though, I bet there isn't much in the way of shorts reestablishing short positions--it has been a dizzying/ominous ride up these last few weeks which would shake any short's confidence (look at how many are bailing on this thread)

Also, I bet most longs are just waiting until January to sell--they won't have to pay taxes on some pretty heady gains until April of 1999 and they start 1998 with an impressive profit.
