Unraveling? I think not. It became clearer than ever the media are going after Carson on trivial nonsense where his claims were essentially correct or at least could not be disproved. Politico damaged itself more than it hurt Carson. CNN was just absurd though. He made them look like the damned fools they are. The pivot point for Carson could be the next debate and I believe he knows that and will be ready. That could put distance between him and the field. If he does not do well he could start a decline to obscurity. I would expect that is the primary reason for taking the time off.
