The heart of Obamacare was the public option. Backed by the government, it was supposed to "outcompete" private insurers, and become the path towards fully socialized healthcare. Everything else was smoke and mirrors. The scheme was doomed the moment it became clear that they would not be able to get the public option. However, there was no way back, and they had to push it through anyway.

Eventually, in the next few years, a Republican administration will dismantle it - and will be forever accused of killing a wonderful reform, instead of fixing it. Alternatively, if Hillary wins, they'll probably re-discover the need for a public option... as a "sensible backup for the failing private sector solutions".
