I agree about the fiscal situation to be the main problem.
But the solutions can be very different. What you are proposing is one time band-aid fixes. Yes, we can raise retirement age, cut military spending and streamline the medicare and might have a balanced budget. But that will only last couple of years and then you are faced with the same budged deficit problem.

The solution needs to be a permanent one. Which is to change the current system to encourage productive work and discourage not working or sucking money out of the productive sectors thru various regulations, lawsuits and skewed tax code. This is where socialists (aka democrats) won't budge and there is no middle road to cross the lake. To get on another side of the lake you either have to the right or to the left. The compromise won't work here.
