Rudolph was a truly dedicated engineer and a loyal and faithful longtime member of the Communist Party. Rudolph was in charge of an irrigation project in the far reaches of Siberia. It has not rained for seven years. The drought was truly horrible--no crops, no food for the cattle, no nothing. But Rudolph had hopes--high hopes.

It was nearing Christmas time. The ground was as hard as concrete. No moisture. But it had to rain. And it had to rain soon in order to prepare the meagre soil for hopefully next year's crops. The seven year drought would be followed by seven years of plenty.

Rudolph went to the window and looked up at the sky. No clouds. No rain. And yet he was certain that it would rain before the midnight bell sounded the beginning of Christmas. He told his wife to prepare for rain. She should make sure that the dams to the retaining ponds were in place to hold the deluge that was sure to come. She should close the barn doors and the windows to their house. The rains would surely come and soon.

Rudolph's wife expressed her scepticism. She ridiculed her husband. She branded him as a misguided tool of the party whose hopes were certain to be disappointed. No rain for seven years. No rain tonight. She told Rudolph that she was going to bed.

Just before midnight, the thunder and lightning from the West woke her from her slumber. She rushed to the window. It was raining. It was raining cats and dogs. She rushed from the bedroom to the living room. There, she saw her husband, sitting in the chair by the fire, dripping wet. He had just come in from outside. His face had a beautific grin. Rudolph looked as if God himself had come down from heaven just to bless and keep him, just to bring him that blessed rain that he so yearned for.

Rudolph's wife looked at him. "How did you know, Rudolph? How did you know that it would rain after seven years without it?"

Rudolph looked at his wife and smiled. Then he rose, went to the window, looked out at the rain and then looked back toward her. She stood there waiting for his reply to her question. Finally, he opened his mouth and said quietly,

RUDOLPH, THE RED, KNOWS RAIN DEAR!
