We can only try to give people enough meaning to their lives that they don't want to blow themselves up for a "cause". And we have to accept that won't happen overnight. We can't keep young men from getting weapons and killing each other in the US, where they have it pretty good. So I'm not sure why we think we'd be able to prevent this sort of thing totally. We won't. We must accept that sometimes terrorists will kill people, and we must find ways to gently change the future that don't make more terrorists, which make people more interested in living than in killing. There are plenty of ways to do that. Demonizing the Muslim religion won't be particularly helpful, though. As you know, I don't like any religions- but telling people how you really feel just makes them hate you :-) I've pissed plenty of sincere xtians off on SI. I didn't give a shit, because I'm not trying to stop terrorism. But it's a perfect example of what happens when you trash talk someone's invisible friend- they get pissed off.

They need to be offered a positive life, a future, before they become terrorists

Western countries have a hard enough time offering our own young "a positive life, a future" these days. Productivity is rising everywhere plus of course there is plenty of low cost labor in developing countries. And of course that low cost labor can't afford to buy many of the things that they make. Which leads to surpluses and deflationary pressures.

The world has problems that have never been seen before. Subsistence farming was the rule until pretty recently. It was only a little more than a hundred years ago when urban populations in the US surpassed rural populations. I don't know when the world at large made that transition.

But all of the above together surely means that we have to think of different ways of organizing our economy.

But you need to keep firmly in mind that the spectacular success of ISIS in capturing territory, was the strongest recruiting tool, and the fact they can go there and get trained is equally important. Once they get clobbered and don't have a caliphate there won't be many recruits lining up for glory anymore. Few of the pundits discussing the issue seem to be pointing this out.

Its drop dead easy to solve this problem. Tell every juvenile male Jihadist that he must finish college by 21 with >3.5GPA and find a job or he losses his jewels.

They will all finish college as required and will all have jobs, and will consider keeping their jewels to be "a positive life with a future".
