I don't think you want to kill more than you have to. But it seems to me the hesitancy to kill these people is counterproductive.

Not really. The problem is that even if you stamp out ISIS/ISIL/IS the forces that created them haven't gone away. Until that is addressed, some other group will just take their place. Fact, the Shia and the Sunnis hate each other. And when one or the other gets the upper hand over their nemesis, they proceed to oppress them. Given the present state of affairs, you either put a strongman in control who can efficiently oppress, or you redraw borders and give each their own autonomous region or country. If that was only Syria or Iraq, that might be doable. But there are cases of this all over the ME. The Saudis and Qataris are a major pain because they like to fund the Sunni insurgencies. Being Wahhabis, they tend to favor they tend to favor the more extreme ones.

So, how likely is it to redraw the borders of most of the ME? And how to stop the Saudis and Qataris from pouring acid on the wounds? Unless those two issues are addressed, this stuff will not stop.

Bonefish,
If you get rid of ISIS then another group, worse, will just take their place.
Kind of like when Obama assassinated Osama bin Laden. DAESH (a.k.a. ISIS) became that worse group that took their place.
