Jon, I haven't tried shorting any NYSE stocks at Datek lately but checking my records I did short WDC at Datek several months ago and I don't recall having had any problem. I probably shorted it with a limit at the bid rather than try to get a better price.

I shorted AOL successfully 2 times in the summer of 1997. They were both limit orders (in both ends; when I shorted and covered). I had no problems at all.

Planning to short AOL again somewhere above 95$. (Interesting to do it before earnings are released February 6th.)
