"Digital Videodisc PC DVD-ROM has been hyped a lot, said Mary Bourdon, principal analyst of the Computer Storage Group at San Jose, Calif.-based Dataquest Inc. She said expectations have fallen due to a lack of content and high prices. "The big market next year will be the sub-$1,000 PCs. But we won't find DVD-ROM here until prices drop to within $10 to $15 of CD-ROM," she said.

Bourdon said she expects no quick resolution of the writable-DVD standard question, even in 1999.

Manufacturers might capture niche markets, but not the mass market, Bourdon said, in part because today's DVD-ROM drives cannot read DVD-RAM and DVD-RW cartridges.
