I will get that book, thank you. I have always felt we underestimated the intelligence of animals. My mother before me, and then I, have always contributed to PETA. In fact when I was a young child, raised by a very wise and gentle mother, about the only thing I would get in trouble for, although I never did it, would be if I had hurt an animal.

I've had very close relationships with animals over the years. The suffering that we put animals through without thought has always disturbed me greatly.

If you remember in the Axemaker's Gift, they talk about one of the key figures who said that animals have no souls therefore they do not have to worry about mistreating them. There is that good old sensitive church again.

By the way, if you're enjoying the Axemaker's Gift, I would recommend ordering the evolution of consciousness by Robert Ornstein. I actually ordered every book Ornstein has ever written and am working my way through them now.
