A sensible electorate would dismiss any one out of hand with a big defeat. But . . . Yes, there is a good deal of scholarship that says that the circumstances surrounding an election are often more important than the candidates. And the professionals who now run elections and candidates are very very adept at creating circumstances that favor their party and candidate brand. And of course ISIS and Al Qaeda will work to elect pretty much any Republican by stirring up whatever trouble they can.
