I think, for the most part, they don't understand racism. It's not just about the N word, or lynching yourselves someone- there's a lot of soft racism, that white people never experience- though we might experience some discomfort in predominantly black areas, we can avoid those- because we have shopping malls, and super markets, and everything we need in our nice white communities. My Hispanic and black students have told me they get followed in stores by security people- these are nice kids, from nice families, with straight A's, who dress well and act politely- but they're treated like kids from the hood. They're stopped while walking; they're stopped while driving. They're able to laugh about it- but they're also annoyed, or even angry. After all, they're doing everything society tells them to do, and they still get treated like trash by a certain percentage of the population. I say the only thing I can say that's positive- living well is the best revenge. Have a better life than the people who profile you, and don't let people like that ruin any more of your day than absolutely necessary. Use them as an example of who NOT to be. Look at them and feel pity, and move on quickly.
