Suspect named in New Orleans med-student shooting

excerpt:

New Orleans police are searching for 25-year-old Euric Cain in connection with the shooting of Tulane medical school student Peter Gold this week.

NOPD Superintendent Michael Harrison said Cain will be charged with attempted first degree murder, second degree kidnapping and armed robbery upon his arrest.

"We're going to find you, we're going to prosecute you, and you're going to spend the rest of your life behind bars," Mayor Mitch Landrieu said at a press conference alongside some of the NOPD's top brass.

Gold was shot at about 4 a.m. Friday in the 1000 block of St. Mary Street.

Surveillance video shows Gold coming to the rescue of a woman who was being dragged down the street by a gunman. After Gold intervened, the gunman shot Gold after he said he didn't have any money. Gold collapsed to the ground, and the gunman pointed his gun at his head and pulled the trigger three times. The gun jammed, and the suspect fled.

According to Tulane officials, Gold remains in guarded condition in the hospital but "is continuing to improve."

Cain was wearing a dark-colored hoodie and was driving a gray Ford Expedition. The vehicle had a black front bumper and step rails on the side, and the rear, driver-side tire was missing a hub cap.

Landrieu said anyone who helps Cain elude arrest will be prosecuted.

Crimestoppers is offering a $12,000 reward for information leading to Cain's capture.
