I think a lot of those result from age. The elderly have a harder time retaining employment or getting it- I think we all know people who were pushed out in favor of younger, cheaper employees. And being at risk like that, economically, and being unable to secure safe and steady employment, and being unprepared for retirement- that's scary- and it's going to make people generally afraid. And the elderly tend to be fearful anyway. Partly it's a side effect of some of the illnesses the elderly have, and of diminishing capacity- that's scary. And so it's quite clear that some of the elderly are displacing their legitimate fear of death and disability, and waning powers- onto the issues of the day. That's quite normal, and I don't want you to think I think they're evil for doing this, because I don't (clueless, but not evil)- but this is contributing to the politics of the GOP in a significant way.
