Not to mention its reason for existing has been overtaken by history. Do we need a bulwark against the Soviet Union anymore?

NATO was created to counter the USSR. With it gone, I don't know what it's purpose is. I guess to counter Russia. But is a non-Communist Russia a threat we need to counter?

I disagree with a lot of people on this, but I think Romney was wrong when he said Russia was our number one enemy. It's becoming an enemy (when it didn't and doesn't have to be) due to the expansion of NATO as an alliance explicitly arrayed against Russia. I would have rather seen Russia JOIN NATO ...... assuming we maintain the alliance at all. I'm probably alone in that view.
