Well, Vi, I wish I knew so that I could tell you.

So far all I am thinking about is keeping an eye on some of the closed-end funds and see if they go to discounts--or maybe they already have.

But you are very enterprising to think of that.

Asian Junk Bonds

Vi,

if you buy bonds, these are normally traded in face values of 10K or even 100K. But of course, you get large discounts now.

Depending on the legislation in the country you reside in, there may be legal or tax obstacles for investing in these.

I'm sure there must be Eurobonds of Maylaysia and Thailand, etc. If you are still with me , Bankers Trust in London is a big trader in Junk Bonds (in my experience), as are probably London Forfaiting Co. in London.

Call up Mrs. Atosa Moini at Bankers Trust, London. She may be able to help you or at least tell you who is in charge and what possibilities she sees, etc. Just remember, this is normally institutional stuff (also amount-wise). You may also have to think about custody keeping, etc. If you wish, I can give you her number tomorrow. She is a very nice person. Mail me to my private mail at thomas.haegin@span.ch

I think a bet via a bond fund is good and sensible, too.

Thomas

Vi - instead of looking at junk treasuries ala Milliken ;-) you may try looking at some very decent companies that do exist. From my perspective here in Malaysia there are some that I will be watching closely over the next 30 days.

F&N (the local Coke distributor is the major beverage distributor in Malaysia) yr. high 14.00 yr. low 3.66 today 3.90

MAYBANK (Malaysia's largest bank)While some exposure to real estate it fits my risk profile. yr. high 30.00 yr. low 8.40 today 11.55

Both high points were while the ringgit was at approx 2.5 to the USD and todays rate is 3.92 (source New Straights Times Dec 24) you can do the math.

These are NOT recommendations but what I'm currently looking at.

Happy Hilidays
