Sometimes, this is true. On both sides.

But it usually follows insulting posters rabidly and personally, rather than parties or ideas.

I can remember when there were more reasonable voices from the right, on moderate threads. Usually they related to Ron Paul or libertarian lines. The traditionalists were focused on smearing Bill Clinton with tabloid innuendo (remember Bill killed Vince Foster who was shtucking Hillary, and Hillary was a lesbian too...) but quieter when Clinton was acquitted after an unsuccessful impeachment. Al Gore soon became the focus of the shitstorm.

People generally came together on 9/11. Then came Cheney and Bush43's Iraq invasion. It all changed again, the Ron Paul folks were saying stay out with most left liberals on foreign policy then, and they were ignored by the RNC.
