Democrats want to protect the country. Plenty of Democrats and liberals, (Muslims and "illegal immigrants" too for that matter) are in the military. But they tend to favor diplomacy and strong defense, not preemptive offense based on exceptionalism, force when absolutely necessary. Democrats favor veterans programs much more than Republicans, see McCain's fights with his own party. Its hard to escape that the military is an expensive socialist endeavor and that corporations need to be patriots and share paying the costs-- not just profit from them.
